Influence of an Air Gap between Bolus and Patient Skin on Electron Beam Dose Characteristics

چکیده
Introduction In electron beam therapy bolus is often used to conform as closely as possible to the target volume while avoiding critical structures in the depth. In most cases a flexible bolus can cover the skin without air gap. However, under certain conditions it is difficult –or even not possible– to avoid air gaps between bolus and patient without reducing treatment quality. In a special clinical case in our hospital (USB) bolus was used in the neck region in combination with a head fixation. The fixation grid was not in contact with the patient skin in the treatment region but the bolus was attached outside the grid resulting in an air gap behind the bolus. Such an air gap can affect dose and dose distribution [1]. The aim of the current investigation is to evaluate the effects of an air gap behind a bolus on dose and dose distribution characteristics.

Calculation of air gaps between bolus and skin on the dose received from the skin
Introduction: In the last few decades, a lot of monte carlo codes have been introduced for medical applications. For close - to - surface tumors, the surface of the skin can be used to increase the surface dose so that all or part of the bunch area can fall into bolus, thereby increasing the dose of the skin. The air gaps between bolus and skin can affect the dose of...

Introduction: Several studies have discussed to the electron contamination caused by the air column between the head of linac and patient for photon beams. Since it is not possible to measure the electron contamination with practical dosimetry, the Monte Carlo technique is an appropriate and accurate choice to calculate particle flounce in radiation therapy. The purpose of t...

Introduction: In radiotherapy, the bolus is often used while treating the tumor under the uneven surfaces of the patients for correcting the anatomical irregularities and increasing skin dose. Wet cotton and wet gauze are still used in developing countries, since the use of wet cotton and wet gauze has certain disadvantages, there is a need for transparent bolus which ...

Introduction: Skin sparing is one of the most desirable characteristics of high energy photon beams. However, the photons emerging from the target of linacs are contaminated by secondary electrons as a result of their interactions with air, collimators, flattening filter and any other objects in their path. This phenomenon tends to increase the skin dose received b...
